What should an activewear tech pack make clear before sampling?

An activewear tech pack should give a factory a consistent way to read the intended garment, not a pile of disconnected files. Before sampling, it should identify the style and its use, the closest reference, the proposed fit, measurements, materials and trims, construction details, artwork, labels, packing requirements, and the current version of every decision. It can still contain open questions. The important point is that each unknown is visible, owned, and connected to a next review step.

For a factory-custom project, a tech pack is the working specification that connects a buyer's product decision to sampling. It does not need to pretend that every material, colour, construction choice, or commercial term has already been confirmed. A clear document distinguishes what the buyer requires, what is proposed for factory review, what must be proven by a sample, and what remains conditional on project-specific feasibility. That distinction helps prevent an early creative direction from being treated as a released production instruction.

The document should also make the service path clear. A buyer who is selecting an existing style and adding a logo, labels, hangtags, or packaging may need a lighter product and branding brief. A buyer who needs a new fit, fabric combination, panel layout, component, colour direction, or functional feature needs a factory-custom development pack. When the route is unclear, record the product reference and the requested changes first; the next discussion can then establish whether catalogue-based branding, small-batch testing, or custom sampling is appropriate.

How is a tech pack different from an activewear RFQ or a mood board?

A mood board communicates a commercial or visual direction. It can show intended customers, activity references, colour atmosphere, styling cues, campaign context, and the personality of a collection. It is useful at the start of a project, but it rarely tells a factory exactly which panels connect, how a waistband should finish, which material applies to a lining, or where a logo must sit. Treat the mood board as a source reference, not as the whole production specification.

An RFQ asks a supplier to discuss a project commercially. It normally gives the product concept, sourcing route, estimated quantity direction, branding scope, intended market, and the questions that affect a quotation. The custom activewear RFQ guide is useful when a buyer needs to organise that wider conversation. A tech pack goes deeper into the garment itself. It should make the information inside the RFQ concrete enough for a sample maker, pattern team, material reviewer, and later production team to understand the same product.

The two documents should agree, but they do different jobs. An RFQ may say that the brand wants a running tight with an internal pocket, a close fit, a branded waistband, selected colour direction, and destination-market packaging. The tech pack should show which size is the base reference, where the pocket sits, which panels create the body, what the waistband is meant to do, what material or trim direction is under review, how the logo is placed, and which version of each instruction is active. A buyer does not need to know every manufacturing answer in advance; the pack needs to make the decision question precise enough to review.

Which sections belong in an activewear tech pack checklist?

The checklist below is a practical way to decide whether a pack is ready for a sampling conversation. It is not a universal template or a substitute for a factory's project-specific review. The table is most useful when it travels with the sample request. A factory should be able to see what evidence supports the proposed garment and which issue the sample must answer. For example, a buyer may know the silhouette and intended customer but still be deciding among material options or edge finishes. Label those items as open. A sample can then be planned to give relevant evidence instead of silently selecting an option that was never discussed.

How should a buyer define the garment before listing technical details?

Start with the garment's job. Name the activity, target wearer, selling channel, intended coverage or support, layering role, and the customer experience the product should deliver. A legging for a studio collection, a zip-neck training set, and a running short can all use stretch material, yet the buyer may evaluate fit, pocket access, lining, compression, recovery, logo placement, or packing in different ways. The technical file should state the product decision, not merely repeat a product category.

Give the style a stable internal name or code. The code does not have to be a retail SKU, but it should let a buyer, designer, factory, and reviewer identify the exact style throughout the conversation. If a set includes a top and bottom, identify the components separately as well as the relationship between them. If one style has several colourways or material options, show which combination belongs to which version rather than treating the range as one generic garment.

Then explain the fit intention in practical terms. State whether the product is close-fitting, relaxed, supportive, intended as a base layer, designed around a particular movement, or expected to sit at a defined body location. Avoid unsupported universal claims such as “squat proof,” “high compression,” or “perfect support” unless the project has a defined, verified requirement. Instead, tell the factory what the buyer wants to review: coverage in the selected sample, waistband stability during a stated movement, underband placement, pocket accessibility, or the relationship between a shell and lining.

What should reference images and sketches communicate?

Reference images are valuable when they are annotated. A clean product photo can reveal the broad silhouette, but it may not show the material face, seam allowance, inside finish, pocket bag, binding, elastic attachment, pattern shaping, or exact logo placement. Mark what each reference is meant to communicate. One image may show a neckline, another a side pocket, a third a preferred hem proportion, and a physical garment may show the desired surface or handfeel. Do not let a collection of images imply that they all describe one production-ready item.

For every reference, separate “keep,” “change,” and “confirm.” A buyer might keep the body length and panel relationship, change the sleeve opening and waistband, and ask the factory to confirm a feasible pocket construction. That is more informative than attaching the image with the instruction “make something like this.” It also makes it possible to identify when a proposed change shifts the work from light customisation to new product development.

Add simple front, back, and relevant side or inside views. These do not need to be polished fashion illustrations. A marked line drawing, photograph, or digitally annotated reference can work when it identifies locations clearly. Use callout numbers that connect the drawing to notes about panels, seams, components, mesh or lining positions, pocket openings, closures, labels, and visible branding. If a detail is hard to show in a single view, include a close-up or a cross-section note rather than assuming that a supplier will infer it from the silhouette.

Which fit and measurement details should be ready for an activewear sample?

Measurements make a tech pack reviewable. Start with the base size being sampled and name the method used for each point of measure. A chest, waist, hip, inseam, front rise, back rise, body length, sleeve length, opening, strap, or pocket measurement only becomes useful when the location is clear. A measure-at-rest instruction can produce a different result from a gently extended or body-worn observation, particularly with stretch materials and elasticated components. Record the intended condition instead of relying on an unlabeled number.

Fit should not be reduced to a size chart. Explain where the garment should sit, how much body contact is intended, which areas need room for movement, and which areas need support or stability. For a bra, the relevant questions might include underband position, strap relationship, coverage, cup construction, and interaction with the selected material. For leggings, the buyer may focus on rise, waistband height, gusset placement, leg length, or the way seams and panels follow movement. The factory needs the desired outcome and the evidence that will be used to assess it.

Grading is related but separate. A base-size sample can establish a direction, while the size range requires a recorded approach to how measurements change across sizes. Do not assume that grading follows automatically from a photo or one sample. A buyer can identify the target size range and ask which points require deliberate review. When a dimension is not yet confirmed, mark it as a proposed target or an open sample question. This is especially important for stretch garments because material recovery, pattern shape, construction, elastic, and intended use can affect the final relationship. A tech pack should help both sides discuss those factors; it should not give a false impression that every dimension has been physically proven.

How should fabrics, trims, and colours be recorded without overpromising?

List materials and trims by their role in the garment, not only by a broad fibre name. State the body material direction, contrast panel, lining, elastic, zipper, drawcord, binding, mesh, care label, brand label, hangtag, and logo method where relevant. Link each item to a swatch, supplier reference, sample, image, or open question. A product may use multiple materials with different stretch direction, surface, weight, recovery, or printing response. The pack should show where each applies.

Describe what the buyer is trying to achieve and what needs physical confirmation. A buyer can ask for a smooth surface, a softer handfeel, a particular coverage priority, a contrast texture, or a material suited to a close-fit training garment. Those are directions for review, not automatically confirmed performance claims. The fabric and trim review can help a buyer organise material references before a final sample decision, while the tech pack keeps those references linked to the exact style and version.

Colour control belongs in the same record. Name the target colour reference, the components it applies to, any contrast or logo relationship, and the version that holds the current direction. Fabrics, elastics, prints, labels, and trims can respond differently to colour instructions. A colour listed only as “blue” or “black” does not identify the target, the material, or the item that should be reviewed. Keep an open colour decision visible until the appropriate sample, swatch, or other agreed evidence has been reviewed.

What construction details are most important for activewear?

Construction callouts make a visual product direction usable by a sample team. Mark panel boundaries, seam locations, pocket shapes, opening finishes, waistband or underband build, straps, gussets, zippers, drawcords, bindings, hems, labels, and any inside-facing detail that affects wear or production. Explain the function of each critical detail. A seam may create shape, join panels, secure an elastic, finish an edge, support a pocket, or change the visible design. A line on a sketch does not tell the factory which job it performs.

Do not use one technical word as a substitute for a location-specific instruction. Terms such as flatlock, overlock, coverstitch, bonded, or lined can refer to useful starting points, but the factory still needs to review the chosen material, panel direction, construction sequence, inside and outside appearance, stretch requirement, and sample purpose. Where the buyer has a non-negotiable visual or tactile requirement, identify the area and the reason it matters. Where the buyer is open to a feasible option, say so clearly.

Critical intersections deserve their own notes. These can include a pocket corner, gusset, strap join, zipper end, neckline, armhole, waistband join, underband, or point where multiple panels meet. They are often the places where material layers, seam bulk, edge finish, stretch direction, and assembly order interact. An annotated close-up, operation reference, or sample comment is more useful than hoping the issue will be resolved through a general statement about quality.

How should branding, labels, and packing enter the tech pack?

Branding should be connected to the actual garment, not handed over as a separate marketing folder. Identify the artwork file and version, logo method under review, placement, dimensions, colour relationship, and which view or sample should show the detail. If the logo sits on a stretch panel, near a seam, on a textured surface, or beside a pocket, the technical pack should make that context clear. A file that only says “place logo on chest” leaves too much room for differing interpretations.

Labels, hangtags, barcode fields, bags, folding, size stickers, carton marks, and receiving information may become important at different stages. The first fit sample may not need every packing instruction, while a later sample or production record may need them tied to the same style, colour, size, and branding decisions. Put already-known requirements in the pack and mark the rest as pending. This keeps a factory from treating an early placeholder as a final receiving or destination instruction.

That does not mean a general page can approve a particular order. Each project still needs its own record, owner, and current version before a commercial or production decision is finalised.

Why does version control matter before and after the first sample?

Version control is the part of a tech pack that prevents correct information from becoming unusable. Put a version number, revision date, owner, and change summary on the pack. Name the current source files and state which pages changed. If a pattern callout changes after a sample review, the next file should identify whether the change affects measurements, material, construction, artwork, labels, or packing. Without that connection, different people may be working from documents that are individually plausible but collectively inconsistent.

Keep sample comments structured. Each comment should identify the style, size, sample version, location, current observation, requested outcome, source reference, owner, and next action. “Adjust fit” is not an actionable record. “At the front waistband on sample V1, review the proposed height against the marked base-size measurement and intended coverage before preparing V2” gives both sides an identifiable question. The result may still depend on a physical sample, but the decision is now traceable.

Do not delete earlier information just because it has changed. Mark it as superseded and keep a simple revision history. This helps a buyer understand why a component, measurement, material, or construction detail changed and lets a factory check that related instructions were reviewed. The purpose is not bureaucratic paperwork. It is to stop an old reference image, artwork file, or measurement sheet from quietly re-entering the active sample or production discussion.

What should happen when the tech pack is not yet complete?

An incomplete tech pack is not a reason to wait indefinitely. It is a reason to identify the smallest next decision. If the product shape and customer are clear but material is open, request a material review linked to the intended garment. If the styling direction is clear but measurements are not, define a base size and list the points that need sample evidence. If a reference image suggests a pocket or waistband detail but does not show construction, mark the uncertainty and ask the factory what information or operation sample would help resolve it.

For a small-batch custom project, the pack can identify the market question that the sample or test is meant to answer. It might be a fit direction, material response, product role, branding method, or collection position. For wholesale or light customisation, a shorter record may focus on the selected catalogue style, logo, labels, packing, and order identifiers. Do not force every project into a full factory-custom pack when the scope does not require it, and do not use a light-custom record to hide a request for a new pattern, fabric, feature, or construction.

Cost, MOQ, timing, capacity, material availability, and commercial terms should remain project-specific. A good tech pack makes those discussions more meaningful because it reveals what the product actually requires. It does not justify a fixed promise before the supplier has reviewed the active scope, materials, sample needs, branding, packing, quantity direction, and destination context.

  • State the style name or code, intended activity, target wearer, channel, and the sampling decision the pack needs to support.
  • Identify whether the project is catalogue-based branding, small-batch custom testing, or factory-custom development, and explain any route uncertainty.
  • Attach front, back, and relevant inside or close-up references, then mark what each image is intended to communicate.
  • Separate the details that must stay from the details that are proposed, flexible, or waiting for factory review.
  • Name the base sample size, fit intention, points of measure, measurement condition, target size range, and open grading questions.
  • List every body material, contrast material, lining, elastic, zipper, drawcord, binding, label, logo, and trim that affects the garment.
